Jane Piirto is a retired Trustees' Distinguished Professor from Ashland University in Ohio. She lives in Columbus. All 4 grandparents emigrated from Finland to the US. She grew up in Ishpeming, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Eleven percent of residents of the UP have Finnish roots. She is one of them.
